Somerville College Students condemn death sentence against Sondos Asem

Both the MCR and JCR at Somerville College passed motions condemning the death sentence.

On May 25, 2015, Somerville College JCR passed a motion condemning the death sentence.

Below is the text of the motion:

Condemnation of the death sentence ruling against Sondos Asem

This JCR notes that:

– On May 16th, an Egyptian court sentenced Sondos Asem, currently a member of Somerville MCR and the Blavatnik School of Government, to death because of her association with democratically elected former President Morsi

– Sondos worked in Morsi’s government as a coordinator who communicated with foreign media as foreign press secretary

– Sondos is an active member of Somerville College Women’s Football Club, and plays alongside many JCR members

– The Blavatnik School of Government, where Sondos is currently studying, has already condemned the ruling against her, and urged “people and governments to speak up for the rule of law and against this injustice”

This JCR believes that:

– This ruling is unjust and politically motivated
– The rule of law is fundamental in a democratic society
This JCR resolves to:
– Follow the Blavatnik’s example in fully condemning this ruling
– Urge college to provide support and assistance to Sondos at this time
– Show and affirm our solidarity with our friend, peer and teammate

Proposed
– Somerville College Women’s Football Club
Seconded
– Somerville College Football Club

UPDATE: On June 7, 2015, Somerville College MCR passed the following motion:

“We, the members of the Somerville MCR, formally, fully, and publicly condemn the 16 May ruling against Sondos Asem. We urge Somerville and the wider Oxford University to continue to provide support and assistance, to ensure her safety and well-being. We hope that this injustice, denounced by other members of the University as well as internationally, will be overturned. Sondos is a valued member of our MCR and we stand in solidarity with her.”
